Patrick Matuga's Journey Towards Gender Equality in the Classroom

Patrick Matuga's dedication to continuous learning and professional growth led him to join the online gender-responsive training under the Teacher Development program. He sought to gain new knowledge and skills to better himself and his approach to teaching. From the start, the program set higher expectations and offered valuable insights, especially on gender issues, significantly impacting Patrick’s perspective on gender equality in the classroom.

Through the program, Patrick has learned to cater to all children equally, without discriminating based on gender. Before the training, Patrick paid more attention to the boys in the classroom as compared to the girls who often claimed that Mathematics was a difficult subject. The training has taught Patrick to give both boys and girls the same attention, calling on them to answer questions even if they have not raised their hands.

This practice has revealed that the girls often know the answers, and sometimes perform better than the boys. By correcting their mistakes and encouraging their participation, Patrick is helping the girls gain confidence, ultimately improving their participation in the classroom which enhances their general performance.

The program has also had a profound impact on Patrick’s personal life. He has realized the importance of treating his daughters equally to his son, which has improved his family dynamics. Initially, he would only call out to his son and buy gifts solely for him, making his daughters feel abandoned. After attending the Gender-responsive training, Patrick began engaging all his children equally. This change has brought his children closer together, and they now eagerly await his return home as a united group.

One of the most valuable aspects of the program for Patrick has been the discussion on gender-based violence. He has learned that many men are afraid to talk about being abused due to societal stigma. With this knowledge, Patrick is raising awareness in his family and community about respecting and supporting everyone, regardless of gender.

His story is a testament to how gender equality in education can positively impact the performance of the learners, fostering a more inclusive and respectful classroom.
